We are writing to European citizens and lovers of the sea to oppose those who ask for exceptions to the Community Regulation of Fisheries in the Mediterranean:
Europe has launched for the first time in the history of EU fisheries regulation harmonizing the activities' of the fishermen operating in the Mediterranean with the need to ensure long-term fisheries resources and protection of its ecosystem.
Until a few years ago, even in school books, the sea was described as an infinite source of resources, which is a natural habitat that could be affected in any way of human intervention. This scientific assessment developed in previous centuries, before the advance of technology and the exponential population, has proved tragically wrong.
Industrial fishing and indiscriminate led hundreds of fish species on the brink of extinction.
Not only are the marine resources are not infinite as the energy produced by wind and sun, but are even robbed by man so inconsiderate.
The professional fishermen who claim their right to fish for juveniles have turned the worst destroyers of our fish stocks, both for their ignorance and for the greed of wanting more.
The fact that the fishing of juvenile fish is an ancient tradition passed down from father to son does not justify in any way, that these people should continue to destroy the sea because they have always done so and can not do much, if not to a brake to overfishing, these same fishermen 'who can not do anything else' will probably be forced to do the lifeguards (whether they have the sea in his veins, as claimed) because the sea to serve nothing except to go to bathe.
It claimed that the laws governing fishing are made by ignorant people who understand nothing of fishing, and instead realize that they are experts because this part of their tradition for centuries because they do this job.
But if that were the case, because the same hunger as commercial fishermen are at sea was not much to draw from?
The depletion of fish habitat is endangering the entire marine food chain because the rings are in close correlation with each other and one of the greatest acts of irresponsibility towards the sea is the fishing of juvenile fish.
The 'baby' is the set of the most diverse fish species, a pound of juveniles are more than 8000 specimens of fish, if caught at birth, justifying the reduction and gradual disappearance of fish species far more valuable: tuna fish swordfish and other fish species of great importance to food and economic importance.
The bodies can not remain inert before the massacre of fish with the fishing of the 'baby' is destroyed the marine ecosystem.
The juveniles (newborn, whitebait, lipstick, foam, etc..) Represents the base of a pyramid of our seas, lacking such basic items all other species higher in the trophic pyramid seriously harmed and the definitive loss of species .
The newborn is the set of the most diverse fish species, fish of all types that are as adults reach enormous size, so now you do not fish anymore, professional fishermen who practice fishing destroy all this at birth.
The protection of juveniles is a critical step to ensure the conservation and protection of our fish stocks.
The regulation of sea fisheries can not be bound to the claims of the representatives of professional fishing.
Please be European citizens, we ask you to set up:
- 'S increase in minimum fish fishable measures now in force, regarded as completely inadequate for the needs of protection of fisheries;
- A specific limit on the use of any fishing gear PROFESSIONAL (positioning networks of all types, fishing with dredges, set of pots, etc.). At least 500 meters from the coast and the depth range of at least 50 meters deep, with 'and the category of' absolute exclusion of fishing gear near ports or estuaries.
We are confident that you will take into account the above, even if it comes from ordinary citizens who fish for pleasure, because we are, and always will remain a part of the sea alive.
With best wishes for the work. Sincerely,
